Development of the extensive renewable energy potential around the Salton Sea may play a critical role in restoration of the troubled Sea. The Clinton Health Matters Conference recently convened a forum on engaging the private sector in restoration of the Salton Sea. Renewable business leaders discussed the opportunities and challenges presented by the Sea’s extensive geothermal, solar and biofuel potential.
Industry leaders noted a number of hurdles that would need to be addressed before the Sea’s full potential could be developed. There would need to be consensus on an overall restoration plan; compliance with array of environmental regulations; a comprehensive financing scheme; and new transmission lines. Electrical rates would need take into account the full value of geothermal energy.
